Define and own Birda’s long-term engineering vision and roadmap
Make key decisions about our tech stack, architecture, tooling, and infrastructure, ensuring we remain scalable and performant
Balance speed, quality, and maintainability, ensuring we make pragmatic trade-offs when necessary
Foster a high-trust, outcome-driven engineering culture where experimentation, data-driven decisions, and learning from failure are encouraged
Hire, coach, and develop a tight-knit, high-impact engineering team
Set up best-in-class engineering processes that allow us to iterate quickly while maintaining stability
Create a culture of strong opinions, weakly held—making fast, confident decisions while staying open to new data
Promote a collaborative, low-ego, high-output team environment
Work closely with Product, Design, and Leadership to prioritise and ship high-impact features
Take ownership of performance, security, and scalability across the platform
Use data and analytics to continuously refine and optimise our technology stack

10+ years of experience in software engineering, with at least 5+ years leading teams
Experience working in a startup or fast-growing tech company
Experience leading teams that build and maintain mobile apps, ideally React Native
Passion for the outdoors, birdwatching, or community-driven apps
Strong knowledge of cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or similar)
A track record of shipping and maintaining high-quality consumer products at scale
Experience growing and managing a lean, high-performing engineering team
Ability to set processes and best practices that support rapid iteration without sacrificing stability
A data-driven mindset—able to make quick decisions while staying open to being proven wrong
Strong, well-informed opinions about what makes a great engineering team—shaped by experience, but held lightly enough to evolve with new evidence
A pragmatic, hands-on approach—this is not a purely strategic role; you’ll need to be in the code too
